After a tough loss to Grand Junction on Friday, the Durango girls lacrosse team bounced back on Saturday at home with a 13-11 win over Fruita Monument.

The Demons improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the 4A Mountain West with the win. Fruita fell to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the 4A Mountain West with the loss.

“We were able to really move the ball around,” Durango head coach Eric Elliot said. “We had lots of good ball movement. Most of our goals on Grand Junction came from free-position shots. Then in the Fruita game, we were just able to really get set up in an offense and offensive set.”

Durango was led by senior Emmylou Harris’ three goals and an assist. Junior Silvie Bosmans had two goals and an assist and sophomore Taylor Babcock had two goals and an assist too.

Fruita was led by sophomore McKenna Jensen’s six goals. Durango junior goalie Fiona Chandler had nine saves.

“Our defense has always been strong since I've been with the program,” Elliot said. “That's kind of our hallmark. Girls lacrosse was set up as a really offensive sport but we focus pretty hardcore on our defense. We're able to really able to shut them down pretty well. The goals they did get onus were off some unfortunate turnovers on fast break opportunities.”

Durango is back in action on Friday on the road at Montrose and then on Saturday at Cherokee Trail.

Baseball continues to play in close games:

The Durango Demons baseball hit the road this past weekend to mixed results. The Demons lost at Pueblo Central 8-6 on Friday and then won at Alamosa 16-12 on Saturday.

After the loss and the win, Durango moved to 6-4 overall.

“I was really proud of all of them today,” Durango head coach Austin Anderson said after the Pueblo Central game. “Everybody on the team gave me 100%. It was really good to come out and see just a good baseball game. There's those high school baseball games that kind of get away from people and teams, but this was through and through a good baseball game, both teams were working hard.”

Sophomore Dawson McInnes led Durango with two hits and a run against Pueblo Central. Junior Jack Englund had two hits and three RBIs and sophomore Austin Romero had two hits and two runs too.

Anderson said McInnes helped the Demons start scoring some runs in the middle of the game after three scoreless innings for both teams to start.

“Big credit due to Dawson of waiting for a good pitch, something he could handle and he handled it well and drove it deep and started running,” Anderson said. “So he's our big emotional guy. He brings the energy to this team and so it was great to have him kind of start the ball rolling that inning.”

Durango took a 2-1 lead after the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Pueblo Central outscored Durango 5-4 and tied the game at 6-6 heading into the sixth. Then Pueblo Central outscored the Demons 2-0 and eventually took its 8-6 win.

Romero pitched for four innings and allowed five hits and one run. He struck out four batters. Englund pitched for two innings and allowed six hits and seven runs. He struck out two batters.

Against Alamosa, the Demons were able to hit the ball much better. Durango got out to a 10-2 lead after five innings and held on to beat Alamosa 16-12 on Saturday.

Senior Ian Szura had three hits, three RBIs and two runs. Sophomore Dylan Burns had three hits, three runs and two RBIs. Romero had two hits and three runs.

Juniors Cully Feeney and Ro Rypkema both got time on the mound, as well as sophomore Dawson McInnes and senior Kameron Lucero.
