The pressure of a dual win and doubleheader sweep fell squarely on Kit Hackett’s shoulders.
The Durango High School girls tennis No. 3 singles player faced Grand Junction Central with the match tied at 3. She won the first set 7-5 before falling 5-7, forcing a tiebreaker that she won 10-6.
“That was the highlight of the second dual meet,” DHS head coach Dave Weisfeldt said. “Every other match had finished – a lot of crowd, a lot of excitement and pressure, too. She came from behind in the first set, pulled ahead in the tiebreaker and didn’t look back.”
Her win gave DHS a 4-3 victory over the Warriors, which followed a 6-1 win over Hotchkiss earlier in the day.
DHS No. 1 singles player Sarah Harrelson was the only position that lost against the Bulldogs. She went 0-2 on the day.
Maggie Hackett won both of her No. 2 singles contests, matching her older sister Kit, who also won twice.
Skylar Barr and alternate Ruby Decora went 1-1 at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 doubles team of Audrey Morris and Jenny Snowberger won both of their matches.
At No. 3 doubles, Hailee Pritchard and Rheagan Kaufman, another alternate, won against Hotchkiss and lost against Grand Junction Central.
The West sisters, Chloe and Emily, reunited at No. 4 doubles to win twice.
“They continued their hot streak,” Weisfeldt said.
The Demons’ busy weekend continues with a 10 a.m. Saturday match at Montrose, if the weather allows.
“They’re one of the tougher teams this year that we’ll face in regionals,” Weisfeldt said of the Indians. “We saw a little bit at the Western Slope Open at the beginning of the year, but they’re kind of the great unknown for us.”
