Fire at Bondad Landfill doused

14 firefighters work blaze at dump

Fourteen firefighters worked for 2½ hours early Sunday morning to douse a fire at the Bondad Landfill, 1500 County Road 318.

Randy Baker, acting battalion chief with the Durango Fire Protection District, said firefighters got the call around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. The fire is under investigation.

“We don’t know what started it. In a dump, it’s hard to tell,” he said.

He said landfill operations resumed as normal on Sunday morning, with employees at the landfill monitoring the burn site, which is about 100 feet by 100 feet, to ensure no flareups occurred.

Two engines, six tankers and a medical unit responded, Baker said. One tanker from Upper Pine Fire Protection District and one from Los Piños Fire Protection District were among the six tankers, he said.
