Five area winners emerge from Piedra Vista Track and Field Invitational

Mashak wins 100-meter dash; DHS girls win 1,600-meter relay
David Moenning gets a good start in the 400-meter dash on Saturday at the Piedra Vista Invitational in Farmington. Moenning finished second with a time of 53.99 seconds.

Kicking off the 2016 track and field season, Bayfield, Durango and Ignacio High Schools competed in the Piedra Vista Invitational at Farmington High School on Saturday with five area athletes coming home with wins.

The Durango girls team came in third overall in the meet with a score of 49 points. Piedra Vista won with 129.5 points, while Aztec came in second with 60.5. Bayfield came in ninth with 19 points.

Many of Durango’s wins came from the girls distance team. Abby Scott won the 3,200-meter run with a time of 13 minutes, 24.63 seconds. She also anchored the winning 1,600-meter girls relay team that won in 4:39.28.

Teagan Garand finished second in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Garand ran the 100 with a time of 13.40 and ran the 200 in 27.89.

The Durango boys came in sixth overall as a team with 43 points while Bayfield came in right behind at seventh with 28.

Fresh off a Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A cross country state championship, Durango saw Benjamin Lachelt, Nicholas Turco and Jordan Helms come in second, third and fourth in the 3,200-meter run. Lachelt finished in 10:01.44, Turco ran a 10:20.83 and Helms finished in 10:35.09.

David Moenning came in second in the 400-meter run with a time of 53.99 and also finished third with time of 4:49.75 in the 1,600 for the Demons.

In the field events, Durango’s Breann Hawman won the girls shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 6.5 inches while also coming in third in a the discuss with a throw of 99-00.

Durango’s Orion Clay won the boys high jump by clearing 5 feet, 8 inches. Lucas Baken took fourth with a jump of 5-06. Alex Hise took third in the long jump with 19-05.

“After a long day in the sun, the Demon squad and coaches headed back to Durango well after sun set with a clutch of medals and a feeling of deep satisfaction,” Durango head coach David McMillen said in an email sent to The Durango Herald. “Sure, not all of the “big guns” blazed, but we have set the bar high for a season ripe with prospects.”

The fifth winner on the day was Bayfield’s Brian Mashak, who won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.64 seconds. Bayfield’s Gabe Kaufmann finished fourth in the 100 with a time of 12.02.

Isis Gonzales took second in the 400 with a time of 1:06.71 for Bayfield, while Bridget Goddard also took second in the 800. Goddard ran a 2:38.12.

Carl Heide took third in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.74. Heide also ran in the 300 hurdles and competed in the high jump. Heide finished with a time of 44.30 and a jump of 5-06.

For Bayfield’s field events, Sam Westbrook took second in both the shot put and the discus. In the shot put, Westbrook threw 43-10 and threw 121-06 in the discus.

Durango will be back in Farmington for the Farmington Invitational on March 19.

Bayfield will be in Center for the Center Invitational on March 18.
