Fort Lewis volleyball goes 1-1 in New Mexico

Loss comes day after first RMAC win

It took the Western New Mexico Mustangs five sets to take down the visiting Fort Lewis College Skyhawks, 3-2, on Saturday in Silver City, New Mexico, in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.

The Skyhawks won the first set 25-22; however, lost the next two sets 25-14 and 25-20. The Skyhawks bounced back to win the fourth set, 25-20, but lost the fifth and final set, 15-7.

Fort Lewis freshman Matisse Monty led the Skyhawks with 15 kills and 13 digs, and freshman Maddie LeBlanc added eight kills. Junior libero Ally Dell’Amico had 22 digs, and junior Delaney Scanlan led the Skyhawks with 38 assists.

On Friday, Fort Lewis beat the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls 3-1 behind Monty’s 15 kills.

The Skyhawks lost the first set 25-23 but went on to win the next three sets to take the match, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-21.

The win was the Skyhawks first RMAC victory of the year as it also snapped a 10-game losing streak.

Senior Shelby Lehman added 12 kills and hit for a .455 percentage offensively. As a team, the Skyhawks hit .225 in the match with 55 kills. Scanlan recorded 41 of the Skyhawks 53 set assists. Dell’Amico had 28 dig, and freshman Clara Salopek added 14. Sophomore Hannah Hargrove had two solo blocks and five kills.

Fort Lewis (4-12, 1-7 RMAC) will be at home against Adams State at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Whalen Gymnasium.
