The local iAM MUSIC Institute found a creative way to persevere with a performance during the coronavirus pandemic on Saturday.

Earlier that morning, the staff measured and marked hexagons across Buckley Park for the 2020 summer concert series. Visitors purchased various sizes for a set spot on the green, with some tables available in the back for larger groups.

Masks were required when walking around, but people brought food and could purchase drinks at the event.

The performers included local soul-funk-groove band J-Calvin, soul band Ghost Tapes and Durango violinist and songwriter Alex Blocker.

The iAM MUSIC Institute and the city of Durango found a way to “balance health and happiness” with the event, and “not let fear take over,” said local teacher Hannah Squire.

Concert attendees Bobby and Lana Duthie said it is great that the institute and the city found a way to support local performers during the pandemic.

“We’re so excited to be out, and it’s really cool how they set this up,” Lana Duthie said.

Public health experts believe that the virus is less contagious outside because air droplets dissipate in the air and wind faster than in an indoor setting. In combination with the use of masks and the designated sitting areas that were distanced equally across the park, the iAM MUSIC Institute found a way to bring the community together during the pandemic.

“It’s so wonderful to see,” Bobby Duthie said.
