Join La Plata County 4-H to learn life, leadership skills

We are now accepting enrollment for the 2018-19 4-H youth development program. La Plata County has more than 15 after-school community clubs, which develop leadership and life skills for youths to be successful.

Clubs meet once a month, and meetings usually consist of a business agenda, a fun activity and a light meal or snack. Members learn to run efficient meetings and make decisions about important topics, such as community service events. Youths gain self-confidence and essential communication skills, such as public speaking, through their social interactions at club meetings.

4-H clubs are also a good way for families to build relationships that last a lifetime. We strongly believe in establishing beneficial youth-adult partnerships. 4-H families take great pride in looking after everyone in the club and supporting each other.

La Plata County 4-H also offers members opportunities to participate in local, regional and national 4-H events. We strive to award scholarships for higher education and offer financial assistance, so any youth can take part in our programs. Contact our office to learn more about how to enroll and what community club might be the best fit for your family.

Another great way to learn about 4-H is to attend one of our family-friendly community events. The events are open to the public and free of charge.

Upcoming events

You are invited to a Halloween party from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave. The party will include snacks, games, candy, activities, costume contest and dance. So put on your best costume and be ready to do the monster mash.

Our 4-H youth council ambassadors will be hosting this and other events throughout the year. Our members plan, organize and implement these events. It is a great way to show adult support in a fun learning environment.

Lastly, the 4-H CODY Project (Communities Overcoming Depressed Youth) will host a special memorial event Nov. 8 to celebrate the life of 4-H member T.C. Rockwell, who died by suicide on this date in 2016.

The CODY Project believes strongly in working with the larger community on positive ways to promote mental wellness and suicide prevention awareness.

This event is called “MOB – Meet on Bikes.” T.C. loved bikes, and we want to bring people together to take a ride for him.

At 6:30 p.m., riders will meet at Rotary Park in Durango. Have your bikes ready to go and don’t forget a bike light and helmet. We will ride from Rotary Park to the fairgrounds on the Animas River Trail.

From 7 to 9 p.m., we will continue the event at the fairgrounds’ Exhibit Hall. Bike riders and anyone who wants to attend will celebrate with food, prizes, music, games and mental wellness resources.
