La Plata County Humane Society is hosting its annual Powder Hounds Snowboard Art Auction.

The auction, March 5-12, will feature snowboard art created by 18 artists in an online silent auction.

Participants can bid from anywhere. La Plata County Humane Society will ship boards to winning bidders.

Snowboards will also have a “buy it now” price listed, if someone wants to buy a snowboard outright without bidding.

Some of this year’s art includes a portrait of Betty White with a quote of hers, a mushroom painting and a snowboard chair.

Visit https://bit.ly/3JKSAek to view, bid on or buy the art.

A kickoff bidding party will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. March 5 at Ska Brewing Co. Attendees can meet the artists, view the boards and place their bids. Live music will be provided by Rob Webster.

In addition to the auction, supporters may also enter the Powder Pets Photo Contest. Contestants should submit the best photo of their pet enjoying the snow, or doing any other outdoor or indoor activity.

The best pet photo winner will receive a custom-commissioned snowboard art piece by internationally collected artist and Powder Hounds co-creator Ray Phillips.

The runner-up will receive a gift basket valued at $150, and third place, a gift basket valued at $100.

Pet photo prizes were donated by Pet Haus, Creature Comforts, pranDOGS and Behavior & Rehab Center.

The photo contest will run simultaneously with the art auction.

All proceeds from the photo contest and the art auction will benefit the homeless animals in La Plata County Humane Society’s care. Money raised will help finance the shelter’s building improvements and renovations, which are set to begin in spring. Renovations include all new dog kennels, flooring, an HVAC system, and roof and ceiling remodels.

The shelter estimates that improvements and renovations will cost $1.2 million.
