Labor Day DUI campaign nets hundreds of arrests

Durango Police report 19 over 3 weeks

As part of a statewide campaign to crack down on driving under the influence,

The Heat is On campaign encourages increased vigilance during periods such as holiday weekends when impaired driving is more prevalent. During this year’s Labor Day crackdown, 103 local and state law enforcement agencies across Colorado reported 964 drivers arrested for DUIs in that time frame.

No other local or regional data was immediately available.

“Twenty-five percent of the alcohol-related fatalities in 2015 occurred in August and September,” said Colorado State Patrol Chief Col. Scott Hernandez. “Considering the Labor Day enforcement overlaps these two months, it was critical law enforcement be on high alert. We hope the efforts of these statewide agencies saved lives over the holiday.”

The Aurora Police, Colorado State Patrol and Denver Police reported the most arrests with 126, 107 and 105 citations, respectively.

On Monday, the Colorado Department of Transportation launched a free smartphone app, “R-U-Buzzed,” that calculates blood-alcohol content based on weight, time drinking and alcohol consumed, and helps users access ride services such as Uber and Lyft.
