An 11-9 loss this past Saturday in Bloomfield dropped Bayfield to 7-13 overall in the 2024 baseball season.

Nobody’s going to pay that any mind this Saturday as the Wolverines take their 4-2 record in the 3A Intermountain League into the game against Montezuma-Cortez’s 5-1, with no more league games left for either team.

The first pitch of the doubleheader at Wolverine Field is set for 11 a.m. on Senior Day for BHS’ Dante Candelaria and Brandon Anderson.

Thanks to sweeping a two-game outing versus Centauri (7-14, 1-7), M-CHS took a three-game winning streak and an 11-8 overall record into a scheduled varsity contest on Wednesday versus 2A Del Norte (9-8 overall). Montezuma-Cortez would easily extend its streak to four in a row, handling the Tigers 13-3.

In Bayfield’s loss against Bloomfield, the Wolverines found themselves playing from behind for most of the game after Bayfield put up two runs in the top of the first inning.

The Bobcats responded with 10 in the bottom and more or less coasted, save for the guests’ five-run fourth which cut the deficit at the time down to 11-7.

Bayfield junior Cole Wagner had a good outing, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run and three batted-in. Sophomore Tavian Box went 1-3 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs. Anderson, along with relieving starting pitcher Austin Wilmer (L; IP, 10 R, 6 ER) and giving up one run in four innings, ended up 0-4 with one RBI.
