AURORA – A man believed to be a suspect in a domestic violence incident was wounded by police in Aurora on Tuesday in the fourth police shooting in the Denver suburb this month.

The unidentified man fired one round near police after they responded to the incident and two officers fired an unknown number of rounds back at him, Sentinel Colorado reported.

The man, who was taken to the hospital, was expected to survive, police Chief Vanessa Wilson said. The woman who was in the home was not physically harmed, she said.

Neighbors called 911 after hearing screaming and a gunshot from an apartment, Wilson said. When police responded, the man came outside and officers attempted to “de-escalate” the situation before the man fired his gun, she said.

Both officers were placed on paid administrative leave while a team of area law enforcement agencies investigate the shooting. Neither has been previously involved in a police shooting, police spokesperson Agent Matthew Longshore said.
