Marsha Porter-Norton increases lead for La Plata County commissioner seat

Clerk says race remains too close to call

An updated count Monday on the election for La Plata County commissioner for District 2 shows a modest increase in the lead for Democratic candidate Marsha Porter-Norton, but the race remains too close to call.

The previous total Thursday showed Porter-Norton with 16,604 votes, putting her ahead of opponent Jack Turner, running unaffiliated, by 126 votes.

On Monday the updated count showed Porter-Norton with 16,676 votes to Turner’s 16,543, a difference of 133 votes.

La Plata County Clerk & Recorder Tiffany Parker said a winner cannot be called until Friday with the completion of the “curing process,” where ballots with issues like no signatures are fixed.

The winner will replace outgoing Commissioner Gwen Lachelt, who is term-limited.
