Mercy Regional Medical Center is now part of the nation’s largest nonprofit health system by revenue.

The hospital is one of 142 in the new nonprofit Catholic health system formed by the recent merger between Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health. The two nonprofits are now known as CommonSpirit Health after the merger was finalized this month. The new system will operate a $29 billion system operating in 21 states, according a news release.

Centura Health, Mercy’s health system, was part of Catholic Health Initiatives before the merger. As a result of the merger, Mercy will be part of a system that serves 1 out of every 4 Americans, said Wendy Forbes, a spokeswoman for Centura Health.

No changes are planned within the Centura Health system as a result of the merger, she said. The names of hospitals and services will remain the same, according the news release.

CommonSpirit plans to accelerate a shift toward providing services outside of homes to the community and online. The system also plans to address underlying causes of poor health and advocate for policies that improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable members of communities, among other priorities.
