Average gas price dips half a cent over past two weeks
CAMARILLO, Calif. – The average price of gasoline has dropped half a cent over the past two weeks, to $2.34 a gallon.
Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg reports Sunday that prices have fallen 52 cents in the past 17 weeks, but the latest cut is the smallest so far.
Lundberg says consumers could start to see higher gas prices if crude prices continue to jump.
In the Lower 48 states, the highest average price of regular gasoline was $2.96 per gallon in Los Angeles. The lowest was $1.92 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Off-duty Memphis officer fatally shot on Sunday
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – An off-duty police officer died Sunday after being shot multiple times, the fourth Memphis police officer to be fatally shot in slightly more than four years, authorities said.
Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong said 31-year-old Terence Olridge was taken to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis on Sunday where he later died.
Armstrong said officers got a call around 1 p.m. about a shooting at a home in the Memphis suburb of Cordova. He said a male suspect is in custody, but didn’t say whether the person has been charged.
Syrian troops gain ground as Putin defends strikes
BEIRUT – Syrian troops backed by Russian airstrikes advanced against insurgents in the center of the country as President Vladimir Putin defended Moscow’s intervention in the conflict, saying it would aid efforts to reach a political settlement.
Putin said Moscow’s objective was to stabilize the Syrian government and create conditions for a political compromise.
Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler snuffs Trump’s use of song
LOS ANGELES – Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is asking Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to stop using the power ballad “Dream On” at campaign events.
Attorneys for Tyler sent a second cease-and-desist letter to Trump’s campaign committee on Saturday.
The letter says that Trump does “not have our client’s permission to use ‘Dream On”’ or any of Tyler’s other songs and that it “gives the false impression that he is connected with or endorses Mr. Trump’s presidential bid.”
Tyler, who is a registered Republican, attended the GOP contenders’ first debate in August.
Representatives for Trump did not immediately respond to request for comment.
Boko Haram stages bomb attacks using teenagers
DAKAR, Senegal – Nigeria’s Islamic extremist insurgents Boko Haram are blamed for using teens and women to carry out suicide bombings in neighboring Chad and Cameroon this weekend, killing more than 45 people in what Cameroon’s government spokesman said is a move to spread terror as a multinational force prepares to deploy against them.
Two girls between the ages of 13 and 17 carried out suicide bombings in the northern Cameroon village of Kangeleri near Mora town on Sunday, killing at least nine and wounding 29 others, said Cameroon’s Minister of Communications Issa Tchiroma Bakary.
