The Southern Ute Indian Tribe will hold a run-off election for the position of chairman following a tie between two candidates who ran in the special election last week.
Five candidates ran in the July 10 election held after the resignation of Chairman Melvin Baker, with more than six months of his three-year term remaining. Baker explained his decision was made for “personal reasons.”
Renee J. Cloud received 20 votes, Byron Frost received 40 votes, Corliss M. Taylor received 46 votes, and both Christine Sage and Adam Red received 80.
Sage and Red will face each other in a run-off election scheduled for Aug. 27.
The Tribal Council appointed Marvin Pinnecoose, SUIT treasurer, acting chairman, and reaffirmed that decision on Monday during his swearing in. He will remain in the role until tribal members elect either Sage or Red in August.
The deadline for voters to register or request an absentee ballot has passed.
The special election will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 27, at 285 Lakin St. Ignacio.
