One Colorado, a statewide advocacy organization that works on behalf of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer Coloradans and their families, has honored The Durango Herald with the Western Slope Ally award.

In awarding the Herald, One Colorado said: “The Durango Herald has consistently called out attacks against the LGBTQ community, come to the defense of LGBTQ Coloradans and their families in the southwest corner of Colorado, and been vocal supporters of legislation that would expand rights for LGBTQ Coloradans – including publishing opinions in favor of banning the harmful and discredited practice of conversion therapy on minors. The editorial board has also acknowledged the slippery slope of numerous religious exemption proposals that have been repeatedly introduced at the state capitol over past few years and continues to be a committed voice in support of expanding equality across Colorado.”

Amy Maestas, Herald senior editor, said: “The Herald is honored to accept this award. We recognize the significant contribution this community makes in Southwest Colorado, as well as the challenges it has faced, overcome, and faces again.

“We strive to cover social issues in La Plata County that affect not just our readers, but all of our residents. This includes local and national issues that affect the LGBTQ population.”

Two other Western Slope Ally award recipients were Colorado Mesa University, and Jason and Becky Vroman, members of the Mesa County Safe Schools Coalition.
