Bayfield soccer falls in OT
Ryan Smith of Durango High School gets hammered by two Fruita Monument players as he moves the ball on Friday at DHS.

A long layoff between games may have been too much for the Demons to overcome, as the Durango High School boys lacrosse team suffered a 14-4 loss to Fruita Monument Friday at DHS.

The Demons last played March 20 in a 14-2 win against Montrose.

“They’re a really experienced team with a lot of talent,” DHS head coach John Robinette said of Fruita Monument. “We drew first blood and were up 1-0 and it was 3-2 at the end of the first and we felt pretty good. We were down a couple of starters for various reasons and they battled through. The third quarter got away from us a little bit. They were the better team today.”

Durango (3-2, 1-2 5A/4A Southwestern League) trailed 5-2 at halftime and 8-3 after the third quarter before the Wildcats (5-2, 3-1 SWL) pulled away in the fourth quarter for the victory.

Durango High School plays defense against Fruita Mounument High School on Friday at DHS. The Wildcats beat the Demons 14-4.

Cullen Robinette led Durango with two goals and one assist. Ryan Smith added one goal and two assists, and Corbin Randle had the other goal. Dylan Gaver made 14 saves for the Demons.

“Overall, they played really hard in the first half,” coach Robinette said. “The kids were getting after it and had some long possessions and battled hard for balls.”

Durango will host Grand Junction (3-4, 2-0 SWL) at 11 a.m. Saturday at DHS.

Girls SoccerSalida 2, Bayfield 1, OT

Strong winds made it tough for the Bayfield High School girls soccer team to find a rhythm on offense, as the Wolverines fell to Salida 2-1 in overtime Friday in Salida.

“It was pretty tough getting into a rhythm with the wind we were dealing with,” BHS head coach Jen Moore said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever coached in such awful conditions.”

All three goals in the game were scored with the wind blowing at the offense’s back.

Bayfield’s Sophie Turner opened the match with a goal, assisted by Misty Helton, that sent the action to halftime with the Wolverines (2-3, 1-1) in front 1-0.

Salida (6-1, 2-0 Region 2) answered with a goal in the second half when Jayda Winker sped through the BHS defense for a through ball and beat the Wolverines’ keeper.

Tied 1-1, the match went to overtime and the Spartans scored quickly on a shot from outside box. Moore was unsure who scored the winning goal for Salida.

Bayfield will play at Buena Vista at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Crested Butte 10, Ignacio 0
