Rockslide blocking northbound lane at Bondad Hill

Rockslide Wednesday evening damaged a vehicle

A rockslide blocking a northbound lane on U.S. Highway 550 at Bondad Hill was not expected to be cleared and cleaned up until Thursday, so traffic was expected to be constrained to one lane in each direction overnight.

The slide occurred about 6 p.m. Wednesday between mileposts 6 and 7, said Colorado State Patrol Capt. Adrian Driscoll, on the hill, six miles north of the New Mexico line.

The Colorado Department of Transportation put a hard barrier in place, he said, and a crew will return Thursday morning to finish the work. There was no estimated time of reopening of the closed lane on Wednesday night, but drivers could face delays as the crew works.

“There was one vehicle hit, but I don’t think there are any injuries,” Driscoll said.

Dan Bender, spokesman for the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, said deputies were called to assist.

“This is the same location we had the large event earlier this spring,” said Lisa Schwantes, spokeswoman for CDOT.
