Golfers teed off on Friday for the 62nd annual Navajo Trail Open at the Hillcrest Golf Club.
In the pro flight from the black tee boxes, Wil Collins had six birdies and one eagle with just one bogey on Friday to take the early lead in the tournament with a 64 on the day.
Jake Miller knocked down seven birdies, but had three bogeys and was second after the first day with a 67.
Blake Wheeler and Blake Kuzava both sunk an eagle and were tied for third at 68.
The Navajo Trail Open is a three-day tournament and will conclude on Sunday.
In 1969, Ignacio football defeated Bayfield 60-0. That was Bayfield’s most-lopsided shutout loss, until Friday. The Wolverines started their season against the defending Utah Class 2A state champs, San Juan, but were unable to keep the Broncos from notching a 28th consecutive win. San Juan had nine possessions in the game and scored a touchdown on every one to win the game 61-0.
The loss was Bayfield’s 11th consecutive, also a school record.
Bayfield will look to stop the slide at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Aztec in its home opener.
The Durango High School boys golf team shot a 229 on Thursday at the Cobble Creek Golf Club in Montrose and finish fifth out of 18 teams.
Zach Griswold and Drew Jepson both shot 76s to tie for 11th and lead the Demons. Owen Muraro shot a 77 to round out Durango’s team score and finish tied for 15th while Ben Ogden (23rd, 80) and Eli Holden (33rd, 83) weren’t far behind.
DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said the team did “great.”
“The best tournament so far this year,” he said. “We are trending in the right direction.”
Montrose had three golfers shoot in the 60s to win its home tournament with a 201, led by individual champion Noah Richmond with a 63.
Basalt finished second with a 222, followed by Aspen (223), Fruita Monument (228), Durango, Gunnison (236), Delta (240), Montezuma-Cortez (244), Grand Junction (251), Summit (252) and Grand Junction Central in 11th (256).
DHS will next host a home tournament with 15 teams, and 26 Demons, competing on Wednesday at the Hillcrest Golf Club.
The DHS volleyball team improved to 2-0 on Thursday, but needed five sets to do it against the Pagosa Springs Pirates.
Durango took the first set 25-16, but Pagosa responded with a 27-25 win in Set 2. DHS then won the third set 25-19, but Pagosa stayed alive with a 25-22 win in the fourth set.
Durango, however, was able to finish strong with a 15-5 win in Set 5 to take the match, 3-2.
Aava Dreger had 13 kills while Sarah Somrak added eight and Hayden Neiman had six for the Demons. Dreger also had a team-high 25 digs while Somrak led DHS with six blocks. Tyler Trujillo received 20 serves, and Stewart had 30 assists.
DHS will next play its home opener Tuesday against Farmington.
The Ignacio High School volleyball team started its season with back-to-back games on Wednesday and Thursday, and the Bobcats won both.
Ignacio beat Montezuma-Cortez in its opener, 3-0. The ’Cats then turned around and scored a tight 3-2 win over Del Norte on Friday, 25-13, 25-18, 22-25, 23-25 and 15-6.
The Durango High School softball team played four games in three days at Ponderosa High School’s tournament, but came up short against the tough competition.
DHS lost to Ponderosa 13-0 on Thursday, Vista Ridge 18-6 and Pueblo Central 10-5 on Friday and Heritage 10-0 on Saturday.
Hosting nonleague Delta on Friday, Bayfield was unable to avenge a season-opening home loss to Durango and fell 16-25, 22-25 13-25. The Panthers improved to 3-0 (0-0 3A Western Slope) while the Wolverines slipped to 0-2 (0-0 3A Intermountain). Bayfield was also scheduled to play Palisade on Saturday.
Junior Aadrey Fraser hit a reported 13 kills for DHS and junior Sophia Chavez nine, while sophomore Lillian Nelson totaled 22 assists in the guests’ sweep.
The Bayfield boys soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 win over Alamosa on Thursday. The Wolverines got one score in the first half and then kept the Mean Moose off the scoreboard to score the win. The Wolverines will be back in action Monday when they visit Bloomfield.
The Durango High School cross-country teams raced in Cheyenne Mountain Stampede pre-state meet on Friday. Competing in the championship division with many of the state’s top teams, the Durango girls finished fourth out of 19 teams with 189 points. The DHS boys placed 16th out of 19 squads.
Dewa Ilg was Durango’s top finisher, placing 18th in 19:50. Charlie Dillman finished 27th in 16:33 to lead the DHS boys.
