Three injured in rollover crash near Bayfield

Car went 100 feet off road near Lon’s Automotive

U.S. Highway 160 was closed in both directions east of Durango for more than 1½ hours Thursday evening after a single-vehicle rollover near Lon’s Automotive.

The highway reopened about 6:30 p.m., said Colorado State Patrol Trooper Jeff Chmielewski.

Chmielewski said three juveniles, two boys and a girl, were in the vehicle and all three suffered injuries, but he was not sure if all three were transported to a hospital.

Neither excessive speed nor use of alcohol or drugs is suspected in the crash, he said.

The car, a 2002 Subaru Outback, ended up about 100 feet off the road down an embankment, he said. The embankment dropped from the road, but it was not a full 100-foot drop, he said.

Chmielewski did not have more details about the nature of injuries suffered by the juveniles.

CSP Trooper Gary Cutler said the initial call came in at 4:46 p.m. about a single-vehicle rollover at milepost 96.

Lisa Schwantes with the Colorado Department of Transportation said traffic was rerouted during the closure onto county roads by deputies with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.
