A Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad train derailed on Saturday afternoon causing some delays for passengers.

No one was injured when some coach cars on a train returning from Silverton came off the track, said Christian Robbins, a spokesman for the train.

Most of the several hundred passengers affected by the derailment returned to Durango by bus, and train staff handled the situation quickly and safely, he said.

“Our crew did a fantastic job,” he said.

The railroad was operating several trains Saturday and it was the first train returning from Silverton that derailed between Hermosa and Durango, he said.

Most of the passengers on the first train walked to buses that brought them back to Durango. The railroad sent a one-car train for those with disabilities who were unable to walk to the buses, Robbins said.

Passengers on the second train returning from Silverton got off in Hermosa and also returned to Durango by bus, he said.

The last passengers to return arrived at depot about 7 p.m., he said.

The two trains delayed by the derailment were still on the track after 7 p.m. and will likely return late Saturday night.

The track is expected to be repaired by Sunday morning in time for the 8 a.m. train to depart, Robbins said.
