Vehicles targeted for vandalism in Durango

More than 20 cars damaged in a week

The Durango Police Department is investigating a rash of vehicle vandalism cases in town.

Cmdr. Ray Shupe said more than 20 cars have been keyed since March 23. Some vehicles had smiley faces carved into the paint on the hood, while others had scratches down the length of the car.

There doesn’t appear to be any rhyme or reason to the location of the vandalism, Shupe said.

Cars were keyed in the 800 block of East Second Avenue, the 900 block of East Third Avenue and along U.S. Highway 160 west of Durango.

“We had seven total vehicles damaged (Tuesday night) in the 900 block of East Third Avenue where someone ran a key or something metal down the side of the car,” he said.

On Thursday morning, DPD received a report that 14 vehicles were damaged in the Residence Inn by Marriott parking lot, 21691 U.S. Highway 160.

“They had smiley faces scratched into the paint overnight,” he said.

Shupe said police do not have a lead on suspects at this time.

“We are asking the public to be extra vigilant, and if they see something suspicious to give us a call,” he said. “Nobody has seen anyone around their vehicle. We have a lot of damage out there.”

Anyone with information about the vandalism is encouraged to call dispatch at 385-2900.
