Westbrook, Phelps throw way onto podium for Bayfield track and field

Mashak into finals with PR

As Day 1 wrapped up at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A State Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood, Bayfield earned points thanks to two throwers.

BHS junior Sam Westbrook and sophomore Ryan Phelps placed in the boys discus. Westbrook took fourth place with a throw of 142 feet, 8 inches, which was a personal record. Phelps was right behind Westbrook in fifth with a toss of 138-03, also a personal record.

“They looked really smooth,” said BHS head coach Gary Heide. “The distance held up which was great.”

Westbrook will turn his focus to the shot put, which will be held at 8:30 a.m. Friday.

“Sam has a chance to be the champion,” Heide said.

Bayfield’s Brian Mashak will continue his season Friday after he took sixth in the preliminaries of the boys 100-meter dash. Mashak ran in 11.24 seconds, which is a new personal record for the junior sprinter. That mark bested his previous personal record time of 11.33 seconds.

“He felt comfortable because he ran in Monte Vista last week and felt good,” Heide said. “He was a little hesitant at the start but settled down. He’ll medal at the podium, but he’ll need to be explosive at the start to go for it. He’ll need to run another 11.24 or better, which I think he can do.”

Carl Heide missed the cut in the 110-meter high hurdles but managed to get a personal record with a time of 16.08 seconds. Heide will have an opportunity to come back and make the finals in the 300 hurdles Friday morning.

“Carl has a little fire under him,” coach Heide said. “He’ll try and make podium in the 300, but he just missed out in the 110.”

Bayfield’s girls 4x200-meter relay team barely missed the cut on the first day. The team of Bridget Goddard, Isis Gonzales, Maddie Foutz and Amber Johnson finished in a time of 1:49.69.

The girls 4x100 team of Tymbree Florian, Foutz, Shaylea Freier and Johnson will compete Friday morning. Florian will have to wait until Saturday to showcase her jumping in the girls 3A long jump.

“We’re expecting good things from Tymbree,” Heide said.

For Ignacio, junior Bryan Gram took fifth in the boys 400 meter dash with a time of 51.24 seconds. His placing was good enough to qualify for the finals at noon Saturday.

Junior sprinter Azala Perez took 17th in the girls 100-meter preliminary run with a time of 13.42 seconds for the Bobcats. She was eliminated.

Ignacio’s two other athletes, Chrystianne Valdez and Lea Monroe, will compete in the girls 2A pole vault at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
