Planting with wildlife workshop available
Durango Nursery and Supply will offer the free workshop “Planting with Wildlife in Mind (& not in your garden!)” from 10 to 11:30 a.m. May 11 at 271 Kaycee Lane.
Maureen Keilty of the La Plata County Living with Wildlife Advisory Board, master gardener and local author, will lead the workshop.

Botanical Society to host nursery tour
Durango Botanical Society will host a Spring Nursery Tour, beginning at 4 p.m. May 15 at Native Roots Garden Center, 26266 U.S. Highway 160, and moving to Durango Nursery and Supply, 271 Kaycee Lane, at 5:30 p.m.
The event will end with a barbecue and live music with Group Shower. Participants will visit Durango’s oldest and largest plant nurseries to see what’s new for 2013. The cost is $5 for members and $10 for nonmembers.

Resource program offers energy challenge
The Resource Smart Business Program is offering the Truth or Dare Challenge.
Participants take on a series of “dares,” or opportunities to reduce energy use, pollution and improve health. Each dare is accompanied by the “truth” of what happens if people fail to take action. Participants earning the most points will be awarded prizes for their efforts.

Birding offer on Old Spanish Trail
The Ute Mountain/Mesa Verde Birding Festival will offer “Birding the Old Spanish Trail” from May 9 to 10.
The excursion will follow the Old Spanish Trail trade route between Cortez and Pagosa Springs. Mark Franklin, Old Spanish Trail Association board member and avid Durango birder, will lead the tour.

Birding festival to take place
The ninth annual Ute Mountain/Mesa Verde Birding Festival, open to birding enthusiasts and the general public, will take place from Wednesday through May 12.
The Raptor-Owl, Thomas Preserve-Bluebird Trail and Beginning Birders tours will visit sites in and around Cortez. Other tours will head to the La Plata Mountains, Dolores River Canyon, Mancos Valley/Summit Ridge, Farmington lakes and Pagosa Springs.
The festival’s keynote speaker will be Mark Obmascik, whose nonfiction book The Big Year documents a 365-day bird-watching marathon by three birders intent on securing a North American record for once-in-a-lifetime sightings.
A four-day festival registration fee of $50 includes programs and the banquet. A one-day registration fee is $10.
