100 years ago: “By a vote considerably better than 2 to 1 the voters of Durango voted to purchase ground on Second Avenue for the erection of a new modern and much-needed high school building.”
75 years ago: “The biography of Robert E. Lee, beloved general of Civil War days, was the subject of an intensely interesting review given by Mrs. J.A. Lee at the meeting of the Durango Reading Club.”
50 years ago: “The trustees of the Durango Public Library directed architect George King to draw plans for a 5,400 sq. ft. addition to the public library. It would bring the total space to 10,000 sq. ft., a figure state library officials would regard as adequate. ... The present 4,600 sq. ft. building is inadequate for a city of 12,500 which promises to grow to 25,000 by 1985 according to best estimates.”
25 years ago: “The Purgatory Ski Area received 4 to 6 inches of snow overnight, but there’s no skiers here to enjoy it. The area closed April 1 for the season. Durango received nine-tenths of an inch of snow. The average snow fall (sic) for April is four inches, while the average for May is six-tenths of an inch. On May 5, 1978, Durango received 11 inches of snow.”
