Herald Staff Report
A controlled burn in the Animas Valley on Monday morning showed the effects of morning winds.
Open burning is allowed in La Plata County through a permit program, which all Colorado counties with more than 40 percent forested land are required to have.
Burn piles must not be larger than 4 feet by 4 feet. Larger burn piles may require a state burn permit.
Burns are restricted to natural vegetation. Burning coated or treated wood products, construction debris, plastics, rubber, tires or chemical products is prohibited.
Agricultural burns don’t require permitting.
Within municipal limits, burning is limited to recreational use.
Permit applications are accessed on the Durango Fire Protection District website.
