Firkin Friday, Steamworks Brewing Co.’s monthly beer showcase, continues with the tapping of a “Bourbon Balls” firkin on at 3 p.m. Friday at the brewpub, amid the 2018 Snowdown Winter Festival.
The Snowdown Waiter/Waitress Race takes place in the Steamworks parking lot beginning at 2 p.m., followed by Pantyhose Bowling at 3:30 p.m.
“Bourbon balls are bite-sized confections including bourbon and dark chocolate, stored for days to allow the bourbon and other ingredients to get quite tasty,” said Steamworks Head Brewer Ken Martin, in a news release. “For our Bourbon Balls firkin we started with a base beer of our ‘Macho Man’ Russian Imperial Stout, which already has the necessary components of chocolate, and it’s big, bold and strong, so it was a natural choice.”
A firkin is an old English unit of volume, typically a wooden cask equal to approximately one-quarter of a regular barrel, or nine/ten gallons. The word “firkin” is derived from the Middle Dutch word “vierdekijn,” which means “fourth” as in one-fourth the size. Firkin beer is unpasteurized and unfiltered and served at cellar temperature - cool but not cold.
