And the West is History

C.M. Bauer took this picture looking north from Carbon Junction in 1915.

100 years ago: “There is a demand for furnished homes in Durango, and many are forced to accept rooms for light housekeeping in order to get their children in school.”

75 years ago: “Oiling of the main street in Silverton has been halted because of rainy weather and will not be resumed until the surfacing material has had an opportunity to dry out.”

50 years ago: “As it was predicted, the first freezing temperatures hit the Durango and Cortez areas. Though the results were damaging in places, it did bring clear skies this morning. The low mark registered with the Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company in Cortez was 25 and in Durango was 24.”

25 years ago: “Mountain bike racer Markus Rainer was recovering at Mercy Medical Center from plastic surgery that reconstructed facial bones from his eyebrows to his teeth. Rainer, 18, crushed his face bones in a nighttime head-on bicycle collision on U.S. Highway 550 during the World Mountain Bike Championships. He collided with an 18-year-old Japanese competitor. The injuries have prevented Rainer and his coach, Harti Leitner, from returning to Italy.”
