Our once beautiful historic East Third Avenue and surrounding neighborhoods are deteriorating. While there are some lovely, stately properties, there are more homes in sad disrepair.
Many of our neighbors don’t even bother to shovel snow from sidewalks – or hire it done. The inevitable melt/freeze cycle makes for treacherous walking.
I hope no one will be hurt–- or worse – before city codes are enforced.
There are two abandoned homes right across the street from me, as they have been for well over a year! As the weather warms, there will be a new crop of weeds choking yards, mud, crumbling sidewalks, fences falling down.
While I’m sure there are areas of Durango that could benefit from an urban renewal authority, as suggested in your article, aren’t there efforts that could be initiated now to preempt more of our town from requiring drastic measures?
I love Durango, the people, recreation, culture. I even love the tourists, but I don’t think they come here to see a deteriorating town.
Nor do we who pay property taxes want to see this trend go unchecked.
