Please excuse my ignorance, but why would I care what political platform Duke Schirard follows? He is a sheriff not a senator, representative nor governor. His job is to enforce the laws, not make them up. I care about law enforcement, crime prevention and emergency response. I do not care about his views on gun control. It’s not up to him if he thinks he can or cannot take my guns away. It’s up to the American people to decide our laws, not Schirard.
His tirades to The Durango Herald and on social media outlets show how much he no longer deserves to be sheriff. For him to engage people on a one-on-one basis and ultimately threaten them with a summons is outrageous. He has become complacent and careless. The Sheriff’s Office is a place of dignity, perseverance and professionalism.
I am a registered Republican, but I will vote for Sean Smith (Democrat) because I feel he is the best candidate for the job. He brings new ideas and leadership but, most importantly, professionalism. Duke Schirard has had an outstanding career in law enforcement; however, it’s time for him to step down.
And to the perpetrator who continues to knock down my Sean Smith for sheriff sign in my front lawn: If I catch you in the act, I’ll be calling your boss to arrest you for vandalism, trespassing, and destruction of personal property.
