Go out and pick up trash for election

In an effort to support Mike Pence’s appearance on Oct. 19, I walked from my house up by the Hillcrest Golf Course, down to Florida Road, crossed over on Holly, down 32nd Street to Main Avenue, finishing my walk at 22nd and Main.

I wore a red, white and blue fleece jacket, but no political signs or stickers or pins. I picked up trash along the way and as I did so I waved at cars.

When I began my trek, I just put my hand in the air but got no waves returned from drivers.

I then decided to give a vigorous wave – that did the trick, probably 95 percent of the passing drivers waved back.

I choose to think that the other 5 percent just did not notice me or were possibly on their cells.

I am an equal opportunity trash picker-upper. I pick up trash from any gender, any race, any political persuasion.

I do this to honor Durango, the town I love. It is not the most glamorous job I’ve ever had, but it is one of the most rewarding.

This upcoming election has divided many friends and families. My suggestion is get out there and pick up some trash, it is good for the soul.

I’m proud to be an American, and I live in the best place on Earth.
