While the weather may have been a bit better suited to such an event earlier in the week, today is Bike to Work Day.
This is the fourth annual winter version of the summertime tradition to “encourage Durango residents to get out and try a more sustainable mode of transportation,” according to the city of Durango’s goal for the event, and those with bikes within reasonable proximity to their workplaces should hop on and get to pedaling.
For those without, there are other options that pass muster, including carpooling, bus-riding or walking.
The city will make it worth cyclists and others’ effort while enticing participants downtown with free coffee, tea and treats at a tent from 7 a.m to 9 a.m. on Main Ave. in front of Durango Coffee Co. There also will be free bike micro-tune-ups available.
The whole event is in the spirit of a community tradition that encourages and rewards alternative transportation – a lifestyle that many Durangoans adopt to greater physical, mental and environmental well-being. Whether the sun shines or not, today is a good day to bike – or walk, carpool or bus – to work.
