‘Packed for Success’ helps needy students

The Elks Lodge Veterans Committee will provide school supplies and backpacks to children of veterans for the 2016-17 school year through its “Packed for Success” project.

The committee is accepting requests through Monday, and backpacks will be given out at the Elks Veterans Breakfast on Aug. 21, with free breakfast for recipients and a $6 veterans rate for their family members.

Selection will be determined by the committee, with preference to those in greatest need. Children or grandchildren in grades K-12 of a veteran who lives in La Plata County are eligible. Once selected, a child will need to submit a letter describing academic goals. The family may assist with the letter.

To apply, contact Samantha Gallant at 247-2296 or srrwjla@gmail.com.

Applicants must provide name of family, number of children, school attending and grade level. If an agency is applying for a student, it must contact the family before submitting student information.
