Attack politics is not the way forward

The rumor mill is ablaze with nonsense: a neighbor this week told me that the new land use plan would have the county tell you what color to paint your house!

Time to exhale. Apparently the mode of politics in 2018 is to attack the process whenever one is momentarily unhappy with the result. Is that the right way to address America’s policies? Or is that simply a recipe for continued gridlock?

Our political system has elaborate mechanisms for reaching compromise. We could be mature adults and recognize that we can’t always get what we want, but compromising on some desires is the way to ensure that other goals are reached. It’s more work, but we can work together to keep America moving forward.

We could try to make sure that the sensible middle ground is defended. Instead, too many people have decided that it is easier to just go into full attack mode on every question. If one doesn’t like the facts, they must be fake news. If one doesn’t like the messenger, impeach them! If we lost an election, call another one!

This is getting out of hand.

Gwen Lachelt is not an evil spirit. She listens. She works hard to understand the issues from every perspective. She responds to public opinion. She has the best interests of La Plata County in mind, even if you may not always see it that way.

We do not need another election.
