La Plata Electric announces new hire

Brad Fuqua has been named engineering IT specialist at La Plata Electric Association.

Fuqua comes to LPEA after 11 years at Milsoft Utility Solutions, a maker of engineering, operations and customer-service software. Based in Abilene, Texas, he worked with utilities across the country on the company’s Outage Management System.

In his position with LPEA, Fuqua assists the engineering department with a variety of technology tools to plan, design and maintain the reliability of the electrical distribution system. That includes ongoing enhancements to the Outage Management System, which facilitates restoration of power in the event of an outage.

Insurance association names new president

James Howes of Western Group Inc. of Durango is the new board president of the Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Colorado.

Howes’ primary goal as president is to provide advanced resources to independent insurance agents and give them a voice in state and national politics.

Howes is a 32-year insurance veteran. He began his career in 1992 with Woodmen Accident and Life. He opened his own company in 1995 and merged with Western Group Inc. in 2000. He began serving on the Professional Independent Insurance Agents of Colorado board in 2008.

Marona Photography moves to new location

Marona Photography has moved its studio and offices to Durango’s Little Red Schoolhouse, 695 Animas View Drive.

Marona Photography is a full-service photographic studio, offering custom portraits, commercial imaging for business, website photography and architectural photography. The studio also features a gallery of Christopher Marona’s fine-art photography.

Business hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, but it’s best to call to make sure they are not working on location.

First National Bank offering scholarships

First National Bank of Durango in conjunction with the IBC Education Foundation announces an offering of at least two $1,000 college or university scholarships for the 2014-15 school year.

The scholarships are available to high school seniors. They may be used for costs of attending a Colorado university, college, junior college or vocational/trade school.

Application forms are available at the bank or can be found at www.ibcbanks.org. To get the online application click on IBC Education Foundation, events, scholarship program and application.

Interested students can send or deliver their completed forms by the March 7 deadline.
