‘Yes’ to schools; ‘no’ to 1A, 1B and Trump

“No” on Ballot Issue 1A, the increased mill levy for road and bridge projects.

The county needs to find a better method of funding the county road system.

People who live in the incorporated cities of the county (Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio) pay city taxes to maintain their city’s roads. People who live in subdivisions off Highways 550 and 160 pay homeowners association fees to maintain the roads in their subdivisions.

The state maintains Highways 550 and 160. Many people in the county seldom use the county roads. Further, the last time this mill levy increase was brought up and voted down, according to the Herald, the people who live in the unincorporated parts of the county and use the county roads voted against it. If the people who use the county roads the most think the roads are fine, so should the rest of us: “No” on 1A.

“No” on 1B, increased debt for airport improvements. This is not like a ballfield in Dyersville, Iowa. Proven ridership demand needs to be in place before we go deeper in debt. A couple of weeks ago in the Herald, an airport official was quoted as saying there is not enough demand to justify more air service to Los Angeles.

Build it, they may not come: “No” on 1B.

“Yes” on 3A, the children are our future.

“No” on Donald Trump. There are certain lines Americans do not cross, disrespecting the military service of a true American war hero, John McCain, is one of those lines. Let us not forget the horrors of what our young men who were held in the Hanoi Hilton endured – the beatings, starvation diets and psychological torture. McCain suffered through five and a half years of being brutalized. I cannot, as an honorably discharged vet of this great nation, cross that line: “No” on Trump.
