Steven Perkins’ recent letter (Herald, Jan. 24) expressing concern with the driving habits of some local motorists, prompts me to add my two cents. It seems the rules of the road here in Durango have been changed, but no one told those of us who got licensed to drive in other towns or in other times.
There seems to be a new set of “Rules of the Road in Durango”:
Lights: Red means go, Green means go faster, and Yellow means “go for it” because other drivers should be looking out for you.
Those signs along the roads with numbers are only a suggested speed limit. Do what you want! You seldom see a patrol car anyway. Speed bumps are an annoyance meant to wake you, not to slow you down.
Double yellow lines mean “think before passing.” If someone should approach from around that blind curve ahead, either the oncoming vehicle or the one you are passing will be kind enough to move to the shoulder or ditch. No need to be flashing your headlights or blowing horns. Show some understanding, people!
When making left turns in town, be sure to drive over all those pretty yellow lines; especially when turning from 32nd Street onto Main, from Florida Road turning onto North College and from Camino del Rio onto North Main.
Turn signals drain power from your battery. Save energy by not signaling. People here can read your intentions, can’t they?
Stop signs are not always for cars, and seldom for cyclists – where’s your trust?
Please drive carefully out there! You never know what set of rules reign in Durango. However, there is not much need to worry. According to the data from the Durango Police Department (Herald, Jan. 24) you are not likely to be cited under any set of rules.
