100 years ago: “With 100 votes cast out of a total registration of 112, the election held at Ignacio resulted in the naming of Hans Aspaas as mayor.”
75 years ago: “Tests of Durango High School students for tuberculosis will begin at Smiley Junior High at part of the clinic which is being sponsored by the San Juan Basin Medical Association. Those students whose tests show positive reactions will be given X-ray examinations also free of charge.”
50 years ago: IGNACIO – “Southern Ute Indian high school graduates will each be allowed as much as $100 for graduation expenses, the Tribal Council agreed. The money comes from the students’ trust fund accounts.”
25 years ago: “Railroad officials said that one of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad trains damaged in the Feb. 10 roundhouse fire will make a trial run this week, but a specific date hasn’t been set. ... All six of the D&SNG locomotives were in the roundhouse when it burned Feb. 10. Three of those locomotives have been repaired and the train will begin its daily trips to Silverton May 6.”
