We have a very busy sports calendar coming up in the Four Corners on Memorial Day weekend. While some will be pedaling their expertise, others will be chasing a dimpled ball hoping to capture the coveted birdie or eagle and avoiding a Sergio Garcia-esque meltdown.
We will focus on the latter activity this week.
An annual tradition, dating back to well before I penned this column, is the Morehart-Murphy Auto Center Youth Baseball Golf Tournament on Sunday and Monday at Hillcrest Golf Club.
This is a Colorado Golf Association points event and has an added purse of $500 and an entry fee of $50 per player. It’s a 36-hole individual stroke play format, with the proceeds going to Youth Baseball of La Plata County, and judging by the recent successes of our high school baseball teams (see: Bayfield and Durango High School), this is money well spent to continue the growth of our local sluggers.
Tee times will begin at 8 a.m. both days, and prizes will be awarded on both the gross and net sides of each flight.
Call Hillcrest at 247-1499 to see if room remains to participate.
Another fundraising event that precedes even the Hillcrest stop, the third annual Golf with Grace tournament, will be played Friday at the Glacier Club. Proceeds from this tournament will help support the Grace Preparatory Academy of the Durango Scholarship fund, along with the Academy’s operating needs.
Call 382-0222 or 749-8438 to see if tee times still are available.
