Sculpture representing the area is better

We have been curious to hear how the stone sculpture at the intersection of Highways 550 and 160 was chosen and what it is supposed to represent.

We are not art experts, so this isn’t meant to criticize the quality of the work. However, personally, we would have thought a piece that clearly represented our local history, preferably by a local artist, would have served that purpose better. In our minds, we picture something like “A new beginning” by nationally known Mancos sculptress Veryl Goodnight. This bronze depicts a young woman, in Victorian attire, holding a suitcase embarking on a new life journey, such as venturing into Durango on the train in the late 1800s.
