A special program will follow featuring Thingamajig Performing Troupe from Pagosa Springs, performing a scene from their production, “A Few Good Men.” You may bring friends and share this program with them.
World Belly Dance Day, Saturday, is internationally recognized in the belly dance community with events worldwide. In Durango, the Shimmy Mob will perform Saturday at the Durango Farmers Market at 11 a.m. and at Ska Brewing at 1 p.m.
Alternative Horizons will be the benefactor of the Durango Shimmy Mob’s fundraising event from 1 to 4 p.m. May 21 at the American Legion, 878 East Second Ave. There will be refreshments, a silent auction, raffle and a performance by the Durango Shimmy Mob’s belly dance troupe.
Center of Southwest Studies offers free annual summer lecture series, starting June 8. A collaborative effort between the Center and local art critic and author Judith Reynolds, the lecture topics were designed to be wide ranging, yet reflective of the theme “A Year in the Life of the West.” The lectures will be offered about every other week on Wednesdays at 1:30 p.m. in the Center of Southwest Studies Lyceum, Room 120. Due to popular demand and with a sold-out June train, the Durango Blues Train has announced a second weekend, Aug. 12-13, of live blues aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Tickets will be available soon and the artist lineup will announced.

The opening reception for the 40th annual Juried Exhibit at the Durango Arts Center will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. May 27 in the Barbara Conrad Gallery. Juried by Holly Roberts of Corrales, New Mexico, submissions are open to all artists working in any 2-D and 3-D medium, except film. Submissions are due May 24.
