Getting a matching dozen points from junior forward Taylor Morris and freshman guard Tymbree Florian, the Bayfield girls' varsity got Lana Killough her first victory as head coach last Saturday against the 4A Durango JV. The win also broke a season-long losing streak from the 2014-2015 season.
Leading by just a point, 5-4, after one quarter of play inside BHS Gymnasium, the Wolverines broke the game open for good with a 13-point second quarter and an 11-point third, while allowing just six DHS points during those 16 minutes en route to a 45-20 conquest.
Senior guard Maddy Duran netted six points for Bayfield (1-1, 0-0 3A Intermountain), sophomore forward Courtney Bayles had four, and senior forward Tory Tate and junior guard Skyla Ruybal each booked two. Morris was a monster on the glass, ripping down six offensive rebounds and 10 defensive for an aggressive total of 16.
Ruybal collected nine, and Bayles and Tate each grabbed four. Duran finished with seven of BHS' reported 23 steals-almost enough to mentally offset the team's 28 turnovers against only eight assists.
This weekend the girls will see action at the 2015 Buena Vista Invitational, starting with tonight's 7 p.m. game vs. Denise Close and BVHS (1-2, 0-0 Tri-Peaks). A 1 p.m. game against struggling Lafayette Peak to Peak awaits Bayfield tomorrow.
