We have had the unfortunate experience of witnessing firsthand that failure to upgrade airport infrastructure does not preserve the airport’s status quo.
When we first moved to Crested Butte 12 years ago, the Gunnison airport offered at least six flights a day to hubs in the U.S. Through the years, the airport infrastructure remained static, and the number of flights and general service level declined. The airport and community simply could not meet the needs of the airlines, so the airlines stopped flying into Gunnison. Today, airline service into Gunnison is seasonal and generally supports only tourism. The Gunnison airport no longer supports the community members, who are now forced to drive to Montrose or Denver for flights.
We now live in Durango and fully understand that an airport is a major driver of income growth in a community. The numbers support that DRO is key to the economy of La Plata County and the Four Corners. Further, it is unfeasible for business travelers to expect to drive to Denver or Albuquerque for a flight.
Durango cannot presume that doing nothing will continue to result in the same level of air-service. The terminal facilities fail IATA and FAA standards during peak times, and the space supports only half the current passengers and flights. It is also a mistake to assume that 1,900 jobs, $5 million in reduced taxes and $119 million in income will continue without proper airport service and maintenance.
Upgrading the airport now is critical. We urge voters to vote “Yes” on Ballot Issue 1B.
