City of Durango to offer archaeology, development workshops

Separate sessions for local officials and public to be held

The city of Durango Community Development Department will host two workshops related to archaeological mitigation for development projects June 1 at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave., in the Sunlight Room.

“Cultural Resources Workshop for Local Governments” will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. City government officials will learn how local governments should work with tribal, state and federal partners to implement sensitive treatment of cultural resources and promote redevelopment. Archaeologist Dr. Holly Norton will also discuss the creative mitigation of archaeological resources.“Archaeological Preservation for Private Property Owners” will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Community members will learn from Dr. Norton about funding and partnership opportunities for private-property owners with archaeological resources on their land. She will clarify state and federal requirements and share partnership opportunities, methods of creative mitigation and the sensitive preservation of archaeology. City of Durango staff will also discuss development-project requirements and some new developments that helped balance the preservation of cultural resources.For more information, contact city planner Heather Bailey at 375-4862.
