General calls Russia top threat to U.S.
WASHINGTON – Russia poses the world’s greatest threat to U.S. national security, President Barack Obama’s nominee to lead the military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff declared Thursday. The White House quickly distanced the president from that blunt assessment.
Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford told senators at his confirmation hearing, “If you want to talk about a nation that could pose an existential threat to the United States, I’d have to point to Russia. And if you look at their behavior, it’s nothing short of alarming.”
The four-star general said there are other threats to the nation. He pointed to China, North Korea and Islamic State militants.
