Archaeology center hosts pottery lecture

Crow Canyon Archaeological Center will hold a talk on the history of Mata Ortiz ceramics, a demonstration and a pottery sale at 7 p.m. Aug. 2 at 23390 Road K in Cortez.

The presentation, “Influence of Prehistoric Casas Grandes Pottery on the Modern Mata Ortiz Ceramics Tradition,” is part of the Four Corners Lecture Series. It is free and open to the public.

John V. Bezy, geologist and co-author of The Artistry and History of Mata Ortiz, will be accompanied by master potter Oralia López, who will provide a demonstration of her techniques.

Bezy has worked with the potters of Mata Ortiz for many years and conducts educational tours to Mexico and Latin America.

López has set the standard in Mata Ortiz with her patterns of graduated squares and triangles, drawn with such exactness that a secondary design of diamonds is produced.

Free backpacking trip for teens offered

During the three-day outing, the group will venture to City Reservoir and beyond in the Weminuche Wilderness. The trip is led by M.K. Gunn, a certified interpretive guide from San Juan Mountains Association, and other local outdoor affiliates.

Participants will need to carry most of their own provisions and gear (an equipment list is available). Free gear rentals may also be available.

Some parents will be needed to help with transportation. The deadline to register is July 20, and there will be a mandatory meeting on July 21.
