IHS cruises to get back on track

Five Bobcats score in double figures

That’s more like it for head coach Chris Valdez and the Ignacio High School boys basketball team.

Five Bobcats scored in double figures, as IHS finished its stay at the Mountain Top Classic with a 91-20 win over Hayden on Saturday at Adams State University in Alamosa.

Senior forward Adison Jones led the team with 19 points, and Nick Herrera scored 18.

“Best game of the year for him,” Valdez said of Herrera. “He’s coming off of a football injury to the neck. Finally had a breakout game for him.”

Tucker Ward scored 14, Zavier Reynolds had 13, and Wyatt Hayes rounded out the double-figure scorers to help IHS (2-2) get back to .500.

“It’s good we’re getting a little better balance,” Valdez said. “We’re definitely starting to come around. Guys are getting their rhythm back from last year. We came out a little flat this season. I don’t know why. We’re bringing it back to Ignacio basketball.”

The Bobcats will pick on someone their own size for their first home game of the year after losing to teams from the larger Class 4A and Class 3A. They’ll face Center at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the SunUte Community Center.

“We’re hoping to get a good crowd out and hopefully get a good win at home,” Valdez said.
