Piedra Vista comes back to beat BHS

Panthers spoil the home opener to hand Wolverines their 1st defeat

Bayfield High School hosted a five-set “thriller” in its home opener.

Undefeated on the season entering Tuesday night’s match against Piedra Vista, the Class 3A Wolverines took the first two games on its home floor against the bigger-classification school from New Mexico.

BHS (6-1) led the Panthers 27-25 and 25-21, then Piedra Vista rallied for the 3-2 victory with 25-14, 25-21 and 15-11 wins in the final three games.

“The five-set match was a thriller with great play on both sides of the net,” BHS first-year head coach Terene Foutz said in an email to The Durango Herald.

Caitlin Phelps, an outside hitter, “had a breakout performance on serve-receive,” Foutz said.

Only problem was Piedra Vista “did a fantastic job on serve-receive, keeping in step offensively,” the Wolverines’ head coach said.

“Bayfield countered with some solid blocking, pacing a season-high 14 blocks on the match.”

Kirstie Hillyer led the Wolverines with 13 kills. Jenna Sirios had eight kills, and Maddi Foutz had 20 digs.

“We are very glad to have (Piedra Vista) on our schedule. They bring intensive point challenges and a championship level to the court,” Foutz said. “It was an incredibly fun match.”

BHS next will play Sept. 17 at Farmington.
