Election starts March 1 with caucuses

The 2016 Presidential campaign is off to a great start with lively races already well underway.

On the Democratic side, choosing a candidate starts with you at your precinct caucus on March 1.

This is a neighborhood gathering with a national impact, as anyone who watched the Iowa caucus results will attest. The March 1 caucuses will elect delegates who are committed to Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders to the County Convention on March 12.

That convention will send 48 delegates to State (Loveland, April 16), which will send 79 delegates to the National Convention (Philadelphia, July 25-28).

It all starts with you and your precinct caucus. To check your precinct, and to check for the Democratic caucus location, check the La Plata Democratic party website, http://www.laplatadems.org/2016-party-caucus-information.

Remember that Colorado does not have a presidential primary. The June 28 primary ballot will have U.S. Senate candidates on it, all the way to county commissioner.

Another office with great local interest this year will be the district attorney race, as Todd Risberg is term limited and will leave office in January.

Finally, all voters are urged to remember that democracy is not a spectator sport.

La Plata County has many dedicated candidates, campaign managers and other workers, and every one of them will tell you that they can use more help in getting out their message.

Make a difference – contact the candidate of your choice and find out what you can do.
