First and foremost I thank you, the men and women in law enforcement, for your willingness to serve. As stated at President Obama’s news conference shortly after the Paris attacks, “(O)ur military, the intelligence community, homeland security, and law enforcement, together, provide a first-line defense against the savagery of global and domestic terrorism ... serving often without fanfare.”
To me the dedication and bravery of our law enforcement community, in a world that is increasingly unpredictable and dangerous (witness the horrific tragedies in Colorado Springs and San Bernardino), is without parallel. Each time they put on their uniforms they become targets of the lawless, and yet they accept these risks sometimes without appreciation or even the respect of those they protect. They are deserving of our gratitude and our fidelity.
I will display a blue light this holiday season to honor our law enforcement members, and a green one to recognize our military personnel. I hope you, too, will let them see how much their service is appreciated.
